PUBLIC PROGRAMS

We train people and organizations to make positive change happen.

Overview

Our work focuses on four pillars of progressive movement-building, each one with its own specific set of programs.

Community Organizing Program

Community Organizing

Raising awareness and putting out press releases is rarely enough. Winning campaigns in our media-saturated world requires people power.

PROGRAM

Peer Coaching Network

When we reflect together we find inspiration and drive. Organizing can leave you feeling burnt out but you're certainly not alone in this. The Peer Coaching Network is a simple answer to the complex problems organizers face. You'll meet peers organizing on different campaigns, issues, and in different regions of the country.

PROGRAM

Organizing: People, Power, Change

Politicians and corporations don’t create progressive change because we asked them nicely. When power is concentrated in the hands of key decision-makers, people-powered movements and campaigns are what’s needed to tip the scales towards justice.

In Organizing: People, Power, Change you’ll learn the five leadership practices of engagement organizing: Telling Stories, Building Relationships, Structuring Teams, Strategizing, and Taking Action. You’ll walk away with a deeper understanding of what it means to be an organizer in your community, and have practical next steps to implement on your campaigns.

Organizing: People, Power, Change is currently offered as a two-day public course and as a custom workshop.

PROGRAM

Inclusive Organizing Support

Figuring out how to centre anti-oppression in organizing is complex and involves pushing yourself emotionally and intellectually. More than any other organizing, this requires peer support.

In Inclusive Organizing Support, we bring together people from across organizations who are actively working to move forward an agenda of diversity, equity, anti-oppression, inclusion, and social justice within their organization to share successes, troubleshoot challenges, and support one another in this work.

PROGRAM

Inclusive Movement-Building Workshop

Now more than ever our movement needs the skills to navigate intersectional coalitions and spaces. This means understanding our privilege, being aware of how we interact with others, shifting our own behaviour, and changing how our campaigns show up in communities.

In Inclusive Movement-Building we will begin to explore how racism, sexism, homophobia, ableism and other systems of oppression can show up in our social movements, and provide tools to support organizers in building more inclusive movements -- by understanding our own relationships to systems of oppression, and learning practical skills to make spaces more inclusive.

Inclusive Movement-Building is currently offered as a two-day public course and a custom workshop.

PROGRAM

Digital Campaigning Training

Our supporters, allies and volunteers are online. The new supporter you sign-up canvassing on a street corner expects to stay connected to your campaign on Facebook. And every supporter you can reach by phone or email is waiting to be mobilized to your campaign’s next online or offline call to action.

If you come to Digital Campaigning, you’ll learn how to design digital engagement strategies to engage your supporters using a full range of digital tools: petitions, social media, email blasts, surveys, texting, and more. You’ll learn how to write compelling emails and social media posts to move your supporters to action, and how to optimize your digital campaigns to bring the widest possible audience to your actions. You can expect to leave with a to-do list to make your digital work more effective, and a deeper understanding of how to use digital tools.

Digital Campaigning is currently offered as a one or two-day public course in person, as a three-part online public course, and as a custom workshop.

PROGRAM

Campaign Storytelling Workshop

Having the facts on your side doesn’t mean people will agree with you, and a persuasive argument is rarely enough to move people to volunteer, vote, or donate. In Campaign Storytelling you’ll learn how stories can be used to tap into the values you share with your audience, and how to use the Public Narrative storytelling framework to evoke emotions that drive people to action, through in person and online storytelling.

We're currently developing Campaign Storytelling as a 2-day public course, and have offered it in the past as a custom workshop.

PROGRAM

Booster Workshops

Being an organizer is a huge job, and rising to the ever evolving challenges requires learning new skills and refreshing on old ones. Booster Workshops take a deep dive on a specific skill set that is covered in less depth in our other public courses, gives a quick lesson on the skill, and then creates a community of practice space to workshop challenges and brainstorm solutions.

Booster Workshops are currently offered as 2.5 hour evening sessions every 3-4 months in Vancouver.
